Austerity measures prepared by the Greek government anger the unionists.

Greece"s civil service umbrella union ADEDY, yesterday said it would call for a strike for March 16th, to protest against the new austerity measures expected to be taken by the government in order to take the country out of its current financial predicament.

"We have unanimously decided to go on strike for 24 hours, on March 16th", said the chairman of ADEDY, Spyros Papaspyros.

ADEDY and the GSEE union, which reunites workers in the private sector, represent 2.5 million employees, half of Greece"s workforce.

The Greek government may announce a new package of austerity measures today, worth 4 billion Euros, intended to fight the budget deficit.

The strike is the third called by ADEDY since the start of the year to protest the ongoing austerity measures announced by the government.

Yesterday, almost 30,000 cab drivers went on a 48 hour strike, to protest against the announced fiscal reform. Also yesterday, the union of the 15,000 tax collectors announced a new 48 hour strike, scheduled for March 8th - 9th.

Greece has until March 16th to convince the Eurozone finance ministers that the steps it is proposing are enough to allow it to reach its target deficit. If the measures announced by Athens will be deemed insufficient, then the minister of finance in the EU could ask for additional steps.

Greece could see its unions go on strike for the third time this year.
