Guaranteed Income for Players in the Men's Professional Tennis Circuit

Versiunea în limba română

Top tennis players have received positive news that provides them financial security in the event of an unfortunate injury. The initiative could potentially be expanded to other sports disciplines, of course, if the necessary funds are found and the desire to act in this direction exists. ATP, the men's professional tennis circuit, announced the establishment in 2024 of a financial insurance for the top 250 players in the world, guaranteeing them a minimum annual income, earnings in case of long-term injury, as well as advance payments for players newly entering the top 125, reports the France-Presse agency. At the end of each season, ATP will guarantee each player in the Top 250 a minimum income based on their ranking, supplementing earnings up to the "guaranteed level." Thus, ATP will supplement earnings up to $300,000 for Top 100 players, up to $150,000 for players ranked between 101 and 175, and up to $75,000 for those ranked up to 250th place. "This insurance will enable players to plan their season with more certainty, focus better on their game, and invest in their team," emphasizes ATP. Moreover, the organization intends to provide financial assistance to players who wouldn't be able to "participate in at least nine tournaments in a season in the ATP or Challenger circuits due to injuries." These aids will be linked to the player's ranking: $200,000 (top 100), $100,000 (101-175), and $50,000 (176-250). The body will offer advance payments to players "entering the top 125 for the first time." These players will have "immediate access to funding of $200,000, paid before the next season and subsequently reimbursed from tournament winnings." "Being a professional tennis player brings incredible rewards, but it's a path full of obstacles, especially at the beginning of the career," emphasized Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, a member of the players' advisory council at ATP, in the organization's statement. "The program named Baseline will change everything. The knowledge that we have a safety net, through a guaranteed minimum income and injury insurance, will provide us peace of mind and enable us to focus on our game," Dimitrov added. The ATP circuit is regularly criticized by players for the lack of equity between the top players, whose earnings are enormous, and those lower-ranked who must make significant sacrifices.
