Representatives of American company Delphi came back to Iasi to ask the local municipality for certain facilities in order to develop an important investment worth a few hundred million USD, according to Iasi Mayor, Gheorghe Nichita.

The company is looking for land with a surface area of over ten hectars in order to build a Diesel engine factory. The investment amounts to a few hundred million USD and may create thousands of jobs. If negociations with the Iasi Municipality are a success, the investment may be initiated in the second half of this year and the factory could be opened next year.

Delphi Corp. split from General Motors in 1999 and is the largest auto-parts manufacturer in the US. In October 2005, Delphi filed for bankruptcy protection and last year, the company had to lay off a significant number of employees in the US.
