20% of mobile phone users have two or more SIM cards that are located inside separate phones. Almost 40% of the individuals interviewed have heard of dual-SIM phones, but very few actually use them, a study by "GfK Omnibus" says.
At the end of 2009, more than 27 million active SIM cards were in use - a number greater than the Romanian population and is on the rise compared to the previous years.
Around 75% of the Romanian citizens use mobile telephony services and 80% of users only use one SIM frequently. 25% of the young (20-39 years old) urban mobile telephony users use several SIMs. Bucharest has the highest share of people using more than one SIM for mobile telephony services (42%).
Dual SIM-phones are relatively well-known - 39% of the interviewed individuals know of their existence, mostly urban males, living in Dobrogea and Bucharest, and most of the individuals aged 15 to 39. The study by GfK shows that in Romania, half the population has not yet formed a clear opinion on dual-SIM phones.
